Short description of project
In the underwater robotics contexts new-generation research challenges lie in the explorations of highly unstructured dynamic environments with a consequential need for systems capable of  handling more rich perceptions of the environment. For example, for what concerns environmental issue, if we are to understand the impact of the world’s oceans on our environment, we must gather data with which to understand that impact. Low cost, unmanned, long endurance mobile sampling systems are, in many cases, a desirable alternative to the currently used oceanographic research vessels requiring large investments in manpower and equipment or by buoyed instrument strings constrained to a fixed position. The collaboration between international research groups which have at disposal different equipments and apply different methodologies, allowing to share expertise, skills and knowhow is of great value. The two groups involved in the present project have known each other from many international events, share a common background in robotics and control subjects, both posses equipments (with different characteristics and performances) of great value in the underwater field, like ROVs, sonar devices, positioning systems, inertial sensors, and geographically are close by. From this initiative it is expected that the improved understanding of the reciprocal research capabilities and interests originates a more stiff collaboration in drafting future European project proposals in the underwater field.
