Short description of project
Joint Croatian-Hungarian Geomagnetic Repeat Station Survey project is envisaged as a joint effort to collect geomagnetic field data from both countries with final goal to produce seamless models of geomagnetic field. The project complies with MagNetE recommendations for two year (even years) period of common European geomagnetic repeat stations surveys. Geomagnetic field data collection will consist of common measurements of geomagnetic declination, inclination and total intensity at the existing locations of Croatian and Hungarian Geomagnetic Repeat Stations Network. The instrumentation includes Bartington Mag-01H DIM on Zeiss THEO 010B, and GSM-19G Overhauser PPM. In the absence of a Croatian national geomagnetic observatory, the survey reductions and instruments comparisons have to be obtained at the nearest permanent geomagnetic observatories, including Tihany (HU). In addition, improved survey results are expected if the portable variometer is used. Thus the visits in 2009 have goals: to train the Croatian side in portable variometer installation and operations, as well as to compare or adjust the Croatian instruments at Tihany Observatory of ELGI. Portable variometer training is planned at the remotest station PALAgruza, during the regular Croatian Geomagnetic Repeat Station Network survey in the 2009. The joint survey of 2010 is planned at the border repeat stations in both countries. The Croatian visits in 2010 are planned to include joint measurements and the instruments control at Tihany. The other purpose of the present project is to establish a joint geomagnetic reference map for the territory of the two countries. This aim can be helped by the temporal harmonization of the terrain measurements, the same instrumentation and measuring procedure, and the joint measurements in some stations. In Hungary, as well as in Croatia, the geomagnetic reference model was traditionally given as a first or second-order polynomial of the geographic coordinates. In the project, our aim is to model the field variation in Croatia and Hungary with the spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) elaborated by Haines (1985). As a second step, we are aimed at the modelling of the secular variation of geomagnetic field using the SCHA method.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
Croatian partner will participate in instrumentation, instruments comparison, funding, organization and surveying of geomagnetic repeat stations in both countries, as well as modelling and preparing the reports and papers.
