Short description of project
The intended project aims to address biology and ecology, including the reproductive cycle, of the stone crayfish, Austropotamobius torrentium (Scrank, 1803) which is one of the four native European crayfish living in Croatian as well as in Austrian freshwaters. This species is well adapted to lower water temperature and fast current, typical for streams at higher altitudes above sea level. During the last century it has been reduced by anthropogenic activities, mainly canalisation of its natural habitats which isolated crayfish populations in headwater streams and disabled natural spreading. A. torrentium is considered as a rare species about which little is known compared to other crayfish species. On IUCN Red List this species is treated as vulnerable, in Croatia is protected by Croatian Law, Law of Nature Conservation (NN 70/05) and Rule Book on Protection of Crayfish (Crustacea, Astacidae) (NN 7/06). Accordingly, in Austria the autochthonous stone crayfish has been considered as highly endangered species. The proposed joint work of Croatian and Austrian scientists would help to improve knowledge on this species, especially on its population structure and reproduction biology which are fundamental aspects for year recruitment in the native population, as well as for future brood stock supply in re-introduction activities. Exchanging experience in freshwater crayfish research, especially in standardising methodology and comparing implementing processes would be another and very important goal of our project and would considerably improve future research of both Croatian and Austrian scientists. To date, there has been no cooperation between Croatian and Austrian astacologists, but the similarities of interests in both teams in crayfish research makes cooperation necessary. It is the aim of both teams to advance cooperation and prepare for a future international research and management project (either circum-Alpine or European level).
