Short description of project
Apple as a representative of pome-fruits are placed on working group target list adopted on IVth meeting and on mandate species list that is to be approved by regional steering committee. Apple is among species that are mostly researched and used with in the region. Researches on apple were also done through the completed regional project on apple. In parallel, inventory, collection and establishment of national collections are implemented through the national activities. Since the beginning of the SEEDNet (2004) most of the partners established collections of local varieties through the national sup port or improved already existed collections. Since certain collections are existing in the region these collections can be conditionally considered as a South Eastern European gene pool of apples. In, like this, characterized core collection of the region it is expected to have many synonyms (different names but same cultivar) and homonyms as well (different cultivars with the same name). Furthermore Balkan Peninsula was exposed to the different civilizations and culture influences through the long period in history (Ottoman Empire, Austrian-Hungarians etc.). According to that there are certain assumptions that in the region also plant material was vastly mixed during long time. In the case of apple it is known that different empires us ed to bring their own material to the newly ruled countries and places. Thereafter apple germplasm from different origins were mixing at one place making Balkan Region being important and unique biological reserves of apple gene pool in Europe. Local people used to give local names to the foreign apple cultivars. Final thesis is that, within the region there are certain numbers of apple local synonyms meaning that it is about same genotype just named differently by local people. In order to reduce costs and possible research misunderstandings it would be necessary to perform pomological studies through the characterization of local material in each partner. In this region a lot of pomological work on apple is addressed to the commercial varieties. Old varieties are neglected and only partially are described in literature. There is no unique representative regional pomological publication on local varieties and this is urgently needed to be done. On fifth meeting of working group it was agreed to establish a standard pomological procedure for description and identification of local varieties including photo documentation of important plant organs (flower, leaf, seeds, one-year wood and fruit). Within this project South Eastern Europe data base on apple trees in existing and established collections will be provided consisting of passport data and other relevant information such as: history, origin, local usage and possible use for future breeding programmes. This data base would serve as a base for duplicate trees identification according to the accessions names for partners use. Apple data base would be published on line (SEEDNet portal) in order to share basic information worldwide. At the end of SEEDNet II phase there will be available a first draft of the Balkan apple pomology, written in English as a result of this project activities.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
To make unique description of Balkan local apple varieties that are listed in national mandate varieties lists of each partner.   Functional database of Balkan apples published on SEEDNet portal in order to share information among the partners and establishment of material for the next phase and coming regional projects.   Pomological description and photo documentation will be pulled together in order to prepare first draft of Balkan apple pomology   Database and Balkan apple pomology will direct activities in third phase of SEEDNet - further evaluation, management   responsibilities among partners.
