Short description of project
The proposed study will focus on the Permian to Early Triassic evaporites in the Eastern Alps and Dinarides. The Alpine Haselgebirge represents a tectonic mélange along an important thrust surface, and lithologically diverse blocks such as various sandstones and limestones, magmatic and  metamorphic rocks incorporated into the halite–gypsum–shale matrix. Sulphate melange of the Dinarides is composed of sabkha type evaporite, carbonate and clastic rocks and spilitized basaltic rocks. The principal aim of the project is to further develop a methodology to analyse temperature, pressure and timing of sulphatic evaporites allowing the recognition of the entire history of such evaporites, especially for the Dinarides where no such detailed studies have been performed. Emplacement of the evaporites during regional uplift is followed by the anhydrite to gypsum transition with the age of emplacement proportional to the depth of rehydration of anhydrite. The intention of the project is to investigate the anhydrite to gypsum transition at selected locations within the Dinarides and to determine how it was influenced by the regional uplift, using the following approach: (1)   Study, classification and comparison of the structures of evaporites within Alps and Dinarides (2)     Study of anhydrite microfabrics in order to recognize post-deposition and emplacement structural processes of the evaporite bodies; (3)   Fluid inclusion study of authigenic minerals, notably anhydrite, from the evaporite formations to  determine of maximum burial P–T conditions; (4)   Fission tracks in zircons (closure temperature 230–250ºC) from associated Permian–Triassic deposits to determine the radiometric age of the evaporite complex; (5)  Fission tracks in apatite (closure temperature 70–110ºC) and U–Th/He analysis of apatite (closure temperature 50–80ºC) from the associated Permian–Triassic complex to determine the cooling ages of the evaporite complex and determine the regional uplift rate. The regional uplift rate will be related to the depth of anhydrite rehydration.
