INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE
The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in June 1907. From the very start its faculty was comprised of the most renowned Croatian artists and over the years the Academy itself has produced numerous great artists, many of whom returned to teach the next generation. Today its faculty is comprised of 140 professors distributed within six departments. As the component institution of the University of Zagreb, the Academy organizes and conducts higher education study programmes in the field of Fine Arts, prepares the students for professional activity based on contemporary artistic and scientific achievements and methods, and promotes international cooperation in higher education. Throughout its history, the Academy has attained very high artistic standards and created a significance of its own, in terms of both its educational standards and artistic creations.

PROGRAMME EMPHASIS
Education in the field of Fine Arts provides an environment in which students can master the basics of all visual arts disciplines and develop their creative abilities and independent expression. The Academy currently offers six study programmes - Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Arts, Art Education, Art Restoration and Conservation, and Animated Film and New Media. All Bachelor’s programmes emphasize a strong foundation in the classical artistic skills and techniques (drawing and modelling from nature, traditional graphic techniques), whereas the Master’s programmes encourage original and creative individual development in the field of visual arts. In addition to the above courses, students have the opportunity to specialize in selected areas such as graphic design and fine plastics. Art Education programmes additionally include teaching theory and skills as well as a significant portion of art history courses. Art restoration and conservation studies focus on artistic-scientific education of experts who will be able to work on demanding heritage monument sites. Animation and a new media programme place emphasis on educating professionals: authors of classical animated film, computer animated film, multimedia artists, video and experimental film, digital film as well as creative artists who can easily find their place in the film industry.

CAREER PROSPECTS
Employment opportunities for graduates are constantly changing and growing. It has been observed that graduates do not adhere strictly to one medium or discipline. The majority demonstrate the ability to adapt to different kinds of creative work within the framework of visual arts. Graduate students either work as free-lance artists or are employed in art institutes, museums, galleries, culture centres, publishing houses, marketing industry, tourist agencies, educational institutions, television, design studios, restoration institutes, multimedia centres, non-governmental organizations, etc.

RESERACH ORIENTATION
Research is carried out in the following fields: visual arts, development of art projects in the field of art practice (studio based research), multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific research in the field of art education, organization and delivery of professional specialization programmes in the field of university visual arts education, projects in collaboration with cultural institutions in the local community.
