Short description of project
Quantum effects play a fundamental role in the redefinition of the SI electrical units, allowing their direct realisation. Application of the Josephson Effect, as the basis of a quantum DC voltage reference, started 30 years ago and currently most National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and some industrial laboratories possess such a quantum standard. Over the last decade there has been a substantial research activity on AC quantum voltage references to meet the demand for applied AC measurements in industrial and scientific research. However, established standards need to be improved and their metrological applications extended to other voltage levels and frequencies, so that their use can also be extended to industrial calibration laboratories and further levels of the traceability chain. Different approaches have been used to achieve this goal and current systems are complicated to construct and operate. As a consequence, only a few NMIs in Europe have the capability to operate and conduct research in this technical area. The overall objective of the project is to develop the European measurement and research capacity by providing European NMIs and Designated Institutes (DIs) the access to AC quantum voltage references, therefore contributing to spread the capacity to countries or regions in Europe where access to these facilities is currently limited. The project will also establish the basis for the future collaboration between metrological institutes working on AC quantum voltage standards. The specific scientific and technological objectives are: To transfer experience and expertise in different specific technologies to enable the integration, operation and modification of AC quantum voltage standards. The purpose is not only to provide the infrastructure but also the capacity to improve the measurement technology through continuing research and development. To design a new practical AC quantum voltage infrastructure accessible to all NMIs, which is easy to implement and operate, maintaining the potential research capacity. To produce a Good Practice Guide on the use of AC quantum voltage standards describing the use of AC quantum standards and including guidance on development and validation of measurement methods. To establish the basis for future cooperation between European NMIs working on AC quantum voltage standards research and the further propagation of their use (e.g. working group, web pages, training courses). To create an individual strategy for the long-term development of the research capability in AC quantum voltage metrology for each partner developing capability in project. This will include a strategy for offering calibration services from the established facilities to their own country and neighbouring countries. The project will improve the European research capacity in AC quantum references, and promote the cooperation between institutes and smart specialization. This improvement is a key issue to meet the targets established in the EURAMET “Science and technology Roadmap for Metrology”. The results of this project will help the European NMIs to provide direct traceability to the new SI definition for most of the European NMIs and contribute to the improvement of the Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs), given that AC quantum voltage standards affect around 70% of NMIs calibration activity. The increased number of NMIs using AC quantum voltage standards will facilitate the diversification of research and development of specific industrial applications across a wide range of electrical metrology.
Short description of the task performed by Croatian partner
Kvantni etaloni imaju fundamentalnu ulogu u redefiniranju električkih jedinica SI sustava, omogućavajući njihovu izravnu realizaciju.
