Short description of project
The subject of the investigation is phytoplankton species composition and abundance, changes in chlorophyll a concentration, the rate of primary production and plankton species composition and abundance, biomass estimation of the most important groups in Lake Ohrid and Plitvice Lakes. On the basis of these investigations it will be possible to estimate the ecosystem stability rate, through the successive changes of dominant and especially endemic species which is of great importance. The obtained scientific knowledge is important for water state estimation of the lakes which are declared as UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. It can be used as evidence of alterations in the natural equilibrium, in order to undertake the proper measures in lakes protection. The results of these investigations will be contribution to theoretical and fundamental biological science. They will find the place in applied limnology in lake water quality estimation, since any environmental change has impact on the plankton development.
