Short description of project
This project is going to be focused on soundscapes of different cultural and natural heritage sites in China and Croatia. This research shall investigate whether people’s perception of the sounds in the respective heritage also reflects these differences. For this reason, soundscape approach shall be used as a tool for investigation. Listeners shall evaluate the soundscapes of well-known environments from both countries, China and Croatia. The research task is to find out how people react to the various sounds of their heritage, and the importance of soundscape regarding the protection of the cultural and natural heritage. In order to do this, sounds in chosen heritage sites will be recorded and reproduced back to listeners using binaural or Ambisonics recording/playback techniques. Moreover, the research will utilise the newly created laboratory facilities of the research group at the University of Zagreb. The reproduction of audio recordings using the spatial audio techniques shall provide the real authentic listening experience to people. Furthermore, the researchers shall utilize narrative interviews, listening tests and soundwalks as the methods of extrapolation of soundscape experience. It is expected that the results from this project will be published in at least one peer- reviewed journal paper per each research group. Moreover, the intent of the project is to enhance the cooperation and better understanding between the two research groups. In accordance with the fundamentals of soundscape principle, the results of the project should lead to a better understanding of heritage sites and their evaluation in terms of sound perception.
