Short description of project
A key driver for the information and knowledge-based society is the migration towards the Future Internet. Advances in broadband wireless access technologies, coupled with the increasing number and heterogeneity of end-points (multimode devices, people, smart objects, machines, sensors) represent the foundations of a networked society. The EU has identified the challenges related to the Future Internet as key research objectives impacting numerous industry sectors, including transportation, healthcare, education, smart utilities, environmental monitoring, and entertainment. New and emerging services and applications such as 3D video and IPTV, gaming, social networking, e-health, and smart environments impose a variety of requirements on the underlying network. As subjective user perceived quality is the fundamental goal when designing services, specifying and measuring Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics is crucial. In order to secure network support, a mapping of QoE metrics to quantitative network performance Quality of Service (QoS) parameters is necessary. In addition to providing QoE/QoS support for applications and services in the Future Internet, a joint consideration related to advances in wireless communication networks and the exponential growth of communication devices is achieving energy efficiency. Energy efficiency is driven by both environmental concerns, and operators looking to reduce operating expenses. In this joint collaboration project, we are looking to focus on two key complementary technical challenges related to the Future Internet, namely: 1)    modeling, securing, and managing the QoE and QoS of new and emerging multimedia applications/services, and 2)    achieving energy efficiency while keeping in mind the design and quality requirements of applications/services. In the past, both the Slovenian and Croatian partners have achieved significant research results related to these challenges. Research issues are addressed within respective national projects and programs in Slovenia (Admission control and scheduling mechanisms in WiMAX mesh networks (ARRS-ZV-JR-Prijava/2008-II/8377), Next generation telecommunications network services (L2-6120),  Algorithms and optimization methods in telecommunications (P2-0246), carried out by Laboratorij za telekomunikacije (research group nr. 1538-016), led by prof. dr.
